Backyard ADU in Redwood City

Backyard ADU in Redwood City

One Redwood City family came to us with a problem a lot of Peninsula families are quietly facing: a parent needed somewhere nearby as she got older, and moving her across town would have meant trading her independence for a shorter commute for everyone else.

So instead of moving anyone, the family grew into the 10,000 sq ft lot they already had. On a property with a normal, un-remodeled 2,200 sq ft main house up front, we tucked an 850 sq ft detached ADU into the backyard: a full kitchen, a living room, a bedroom, and a bathroom, all under one roof that’s entirely hers. She has her own front door and her own space, five steps from her grandkids instead of five states away.

The family was candid about their biggest worry going in: permitting. They’d heard horror stories from neighbors about additions stuck in review for a year. We walked them through California’s streamlined ADU rules before design even started, so they knew exactly what was buildable, and how fast, before they fell in love with a floor plan the city might not approve.

Construction ran alongside daily life for several months, with the family staying in the main house the entire time. What mattered most to them afterward wasn’t just the extra square footage. It was that grandma’s kitchen light is the last thing anyone forgets to check on their way to bed.
